When Amme Jones was a little girl, her grandmother worked as a one-on-one, direct support aid for a man with a disability.
Each Christmas and Thanksgiving, he would join their family to celebrate the holidays. The man was non-verbal, but her grandmother knew exactly how to communicate with him.
“He was always there,” Amme says. “He was just part of the family.”
After high school, she knew she wanted to follow in her grandmother’s footsteps and help people. In 2012, she became a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and began working in a nursing home.
But she wanted something more from her career. That’s when she found Typical Life Corporation (TLC).

'It’s a beautiful place to work'
Amme began working as a Direct Support Professional for TLC in 2017.
Most days, she’ll work one-on-one with one of their day program clients. She’ll help that person heat up lunch, do arts and crafts projects, or play music. They may also go out shopping or to a restaurant.
“We’re on their time,” Amme says.
Throughout her six years at TLC, she has loved seeing her clients grow and improve their behaviors. When they get one-on-one attention with someone who takes the time to understand their needs and wants, she sees them make enormous progress.
“I treat them how I want to be treated,” she says. “I listen to them. I put them first.”
Amme loves her job with TLC, complete with all of its challenges.
“You’ve got to be here for them — not just for a check,” she says. “You’ll get to work with good people. Nothing in life is easy, but it’s a beautiful place to work.”
